Are you looking for a great way to end the summer? Why not take the family on a tour of the stars. No, we aren’t talking about the ones that are in all the movies. A beautiful tour of the universe around us.

Why not take a trip to the Little Thompson Observatory in Colorado? There is a lot that the family can learn about our universe and have fun doing so.

What you can do at the observatory

To start off with, the observatory has public visits on the third Thursday of every month. Everyone is given the opportunity to see billions of stars and planets all around us. This event starts at around 7 pm.

Different speakers give lectures on different planets and other celestial sights that can be seen. If you aren’t on a schedule, this is a great way to start off your trip to the observatory.

Want to do more, then you can actually set up reservations for additional fun. Through setting up a reservation, you have the opportunity to three different telescopes plus other resources that are available at the observatory. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to play with the telescopes on your own, volunteers will assist in all of your needs.

The observatory also offers plenty of presentations and movies about various things around the universe. This will give you even more information about the universe around us.

If you are interested, there are special events that go on throughout the year. Some of the different events are presentations that may not be so exciting for the kiddos. So check the events calendar.

A part of the observatory that the kids might be really interested in is a section that is called the “Warm Room”. In this room, there is a huge wall. The wall is filled with millions of stars. A full explanation of what the night sky may look like throughout the year. There is also information given about the different constellations. Volunteers explain the different areas. Heck, the kids may get excited when they point out the big dipper and the little dipper. After you drop the kids off at the observatory, head on down to the Blue Mountain Wine Tasting for some delicious wine.

Be Prepared

When you plan your vacation to visit the Little Thompson Observatory, it is a good idea to make sure that you and your family are prepared.

Depending on the time of year, it is a good idea to dress appropriately. The reason being, when you go up to the telescopes, the room is kept at the temperature that it is outside, so for cooler nights, it’s good to make sure that everyone has a jacket for warmth.

It is also recommended to have a flashlight handy, there are areas where it will be needed to make your way upstairs in the dark, where there are no lights available. The kids will have fun carrying a flashlight, so be prepared. They are sure to want to do shadow animals.

For additional information as you plan your vacation to visit the observatory, it is a good idea to visit the website. This will give you additional information. If you are planning to make this a family trip, be sure to read the section on the do’s and don’ts so that you are prepared properly for your visit.

It is incredible when you can learn about the universe around us and see things that you have never been able to see before. Have fun on a memorable journey that will be remembered for a lifetime and shared with family and friends. The family and friends of Berthoud Dental Care often spend time looking at the stars.
